Underhand Padel Tennis Serve

What’s Padel All About?

Padel is a racket sport that brings together elements of tennis and squash, and it’s played on an enclosed court that’s roughly three-quarters the size of a regular tennis court.

Glass walls. Metal fencing. The ball plays off the glass mid-rally. That gives you angles and shots you’d never find on a tennis court.

You serve underarm, you always play doubles, and the matches are quick but really straightforward to follow. If you’ve heard padel described as the best of tennis and squash in a single sport, that’s a fairly spot-on description.

Scoring runs the same as tennis (15, 30, 40, game), with one major difference: at deuce, padel uses a golden point in place of advantage. One rally settles the whole game, and that keeps matches ticking over and makes those tight games really gripping!

It’s played with a solid racket instead of a strung one, so you don’t need the same form that makes tennis so difficult for new players.

Most newcomers grasp the basics within their first half hour playing. That brief learning curve is a big reason padel is now one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with over 35 million players in 150 countries according to the FIP World Padel Report 2025. Fastest-growing racket sport in the UK. Padel in Glasgow has been at the front of that movement in Scotland.

Our Padel Courts Close to Old Kilpatrick

We’ve got four indoor panoramic padel courts right here at The Court, all housed inside our 33,000 sq ft facility on Glasgow’s south side!

Each court is full-sized (20m x 10m) with glass back walls and metal cage surrounds, all fitted to the same spec used at professional tournaments. We’re fully indoors, so come rain or shine, you can always play.

Old Kilpatrick and wall-to-wall sunshine don’t always go together. Year-round availability counts. Sure, outdoor courts dotted around the city are good when the weather cooperates, but why gamble when you don’t have to?

Courts are open from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays, so there’s plenty of flexibility to fit a match into your week! Every element of the venue was carefully fitted to deliver the ultimate padel experience.

Courts are well-lit, properly ventilated, and set up to give you space around the cage.

We could’ve squeezed a couple of courts into a warehouse or tagged them onto a leisure centre, but that’s not what we had in mind. We wanted to build somewhere that felt purpose-made for padel.

Getting Started with Padel in Old Kilpatrick

Most people who type “padel Old Kilpatrick” into their phone have never actually had a game.

If that’s you, here’s what you should know: padel is one of the most accessible racket sports to begin getting into quickly.

Because you serve underarm, there’s no tricky overhand serving mechanic to learn before you can get a rally started! Because the court is smaller than a tennis court, you won’t need to chase into back corners, and the glass walls keep the ball in play rather than sailing off into the distance.

Put it all together and you get more time actually striking the ball and much less time chasing after it.

You don’t need to carry any gear with you either. We’ve got rackets and balls in stock to pick up at the venue, so you can show up in trainers and activewear and be on court within no time.

Simply hop online, select a time, and round up three friends along (padel is a doubles game, so you’ll want four players in all)! There’s no need to be anxious about coming across like a complete beginner.

The whole padel experience is geared towards having a great time, and most players are laughing and getting competitive within their first few rallies.

Don’t forget that even folk who’ve been playing for ages get caught out by the unexpected bounces the glass walls generate. You want a spot to play padel in Glasgow where you don’t feel out of your depth the instant you walk onto the court, and that’s precisely what we’ve created here.

Coaching and Social Padel Close to Old Kilpatrick

If you’d prefer have a proper introduction to padel rather than just muddling it out as you go, our expert coaches run sessions for various ability levels. For beginner, you’ll get walked through the basic shots (forehand, backhand, volley, and the all-important lob), court positioning, and the basics.

That understanding of where to stand and when to approach the net makes a enormous difference in padel, and learning it through coaching is a far quicker route to actually having fun in your matches.

Once the basics are covered and you’re itching to move your game further, more technical sessions are there for you.

The bandeja (a controlled overhead shot that keeps you at the net) and the vibora (a more aggressive version with spin) are two shots that divide casual players from those who properly get the game. Social sessions are happening too. Come along on your own and get put together with fellow players.

The Court Team

It’s one of the easiest ways to get to know folk and get regular sessions going without having to round up four players every single time! A fair few of our members from Old Kilpatrick first came to a social session on their own and now regularly have a game two or three times a week with people they met on court.

More to Offer Than Padel Courts

This is probably where The Court looks most different from other padel venues near Old Kilpatrick.

The Court isn’t just a shed with courts crammed in. With a fully serviced bar and restaurant on site, you can eat and drink either side of your game without having to head anywhere else.

Chatting During Pickleball Game

It turns an hour of padel into a full night out, and that’s precisely how we built it.

We’ve also got a Pilates studio under the same roof! Padel’s brilliant for cardio and agility, and Pilates strengthens the core {strength} and flexibility that enable you perform better on court and recover sooner.

Quite a few of our members already do both in the a single visit! We also have a pro shop on site, so if you get hooked (which often does happen) you can buy your own racket without having to buy online and hope if it’ll turn out right.

The team in the pro shop can advise you on what works for your level and playing style.

Private events are another element of what we do. Team building. Birthdays. A alternative night out with pals. Padel’s easy to arrange for groups: straightforward rules, quick games.

Add the bar and restaurant to that, and you’ve got the full evening covered in one spot!

The Court: A Family Padel Club in Glasgow’s Southside

One thing players sense fairly fast about The Court is that it genuinely doesn’t seem like a corporate gym or a hire-a-court-and-leave sort of place!

There’s a proper padel community here, and it’s built up naturally from the players who play regularly, the social sessions that bring new faces together, and the truth that the bar and restaurant give everyone a incentive to stick around after the last point.

Experienced players mix with newcomers who picked it up last month. That’s the energy we aimed for from day one.

There’s a regular league for members who want a bit of structure and good-natured competition, and we host tournaments throughout the year that draw in players from across Glasgow and beyond.

But it’s not purely about winning.

Social sport at its core. Some of the most memorable nights here are the ones where nobody’s keeping score and the restaurant is packed with people who came for a match and stayed for the meal.

Searching for a padel club in Glasgow that comes across like somewhere you truly belong isn’t ever easy, but come and see what the community is like here and we reckon you’ll notice the difference.

How Padel Compares to Other Sports to Play in Old Kilpatrick

Tennis convert? The largest adjustment is the walls.

In padel, the ball staying in play off the glass shifts everything about how you approach shot selection.

You can’t just fire winners into the corners the way you would on a tennis court, because your opponent can still retrieve the ball off the back wall!

Power takes a back seat to patience and placement, which is why tennis players frequently find padel both a welcome change and surprisingly tricky at first.

For squash players, the move to padel is a touch more natural, because you’re already comfortable with walls being part of the game.

The key differences are that you hit across a net as opposed to into the same wall, the court is open above you as opposed to enclosed on all sides, and the ball bounces differently off glass compared to a squash court wall.

Squash players adapt pretty sharpish though. The volleying at the net feels instinctive.

If you’ve never played a racket sport at all, padel is honestly the smartest one to start with!

It’s more forgiving than tennis, more social than squash (because it’s always doubles), and less physically punishing than five-a-side footy while still giving you a proper workout.

An hour of padel burns somewhere between 400 to 700 calories depending on how hard you go, and it won’t ruin your knees the way running on concrete does.
