Underhand Padel Tennis Serve

Padel Explained

Padel’s a racket sport that blends tennis and squash, and it’s played on an enclosed court that’s about three-quarters the size of a standard tennis court.

The court is enclosed by glass walls and metal fencing, and the ball can come off those walls mid-rally, which opens up angles and shots you’d never get in tennis.

You serve underarm, you always play doubles, and the matches are quick but remarkably straightforward to follow. If you’ve ever heard it described as the best of tennis and squash in a single sport, that’s a reasonably accurate summary.

The scoring follows tennis (15, 30, 40, game), with one notable difference to be aware of: at deuce, padel uses a golden point rather than advantage. One rally decides it, which keeps games moving and adds a real shot of pressure that makes the tense games properly tense.

You play with a solid racket rather than a strung one, so you don’t need the swing mechanics that makes tennis so hard for newcomers.

Most players are grasping the basics within their first half hour on court, honestly! This quick learning curve is one of the main reasons padel has expanded into one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with over 35 million players across 150 countries according to the FIP World Padel Report 2025. It’s the fastest-growing racket sport in the UK as well, and padel in Glasgow has been driving that growth in Scotland.

Indoor Padel Courts Near Balloch

Our 33,000 sq ft venue on Glasgow’s south side is home to four indoor panoramic padel courts, all fitted for the sport.

The courts are full-sized at 20m x 10m, with glass back walls and metal cage frames, fitted to the same standards you’d find at professional tournaments! Because we’re fully indoors, you can play rain or shine, no matter what it’s doing outside!

Anyone from Balloch knows that wall-to-wall sunshine isn’t exactly guaranteed, so year-round indoor play makes a real difference. Sure, outdoor courts around the city are great when the weather holds, but why roll the dice when you can avoid it?

Our courts run from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays, so there’s plenty of flexibility to fit a session around work or family life. The space itself was deliberately set up to create the best possible padel experience.

Well-lit. Properly ventilated. Real room around every cage.

We could’ve wedged a couple of courts into a warehouse or tagged them onto a leisure centre, but that’s not what we wanted. We wanted to create somewhere that felt right for padel.

Padel for Beginners in Balloch

“Padel Balloch” gets searched a lot. Most players typing it in have never tried it.

If that’s you, here’s what you should know: padel is one of the simplest racket sports to begin getting into from the off.

The serve is underarm, which means there’s no overhead serving technique to master before you can even get a rally going. Because the court is smaller than a tennis court, you won’t need to run into back corners, and the glass walls keep the ball in play rather than flying off into the distance.

Padel Racket being used in a game.

The net effect is more time actually striking the ball and less time dashing after it.

You don’t need to bring any kit either. We’ve got rackets and balls in stock to borrow at the club, so you can turn up in trainers and activewear and be out playing within moments!

Simply hop online, select a time, and grab three pals (padel is a doubles game, so you’ll require four players). If you’re nervous about feeling like a right beginner, don’t be.

Before your first few matches, you’ll be smiling and into it, because that’s what the whole padel experience is set up for: having a properly brilliant time.

Those glass walls produce bounces that not a soul can completely predict, and they catch all players out, from first-timers to people who’ve been on court for ages. On the hunt for a venue to play padel in Glasgow where you won’t feel out of your depth straight away? This is it.

Padel Coaching and Social Sessions in Balloch

Some players prefer a proper intro to padel rather than just figuring it out as they go, and that’s just what our experienced coaches offer with sessions for various ability levels. Beginners get walked through the basic shots (forehand, backhand, volley, and the all-important lob), court positioning, and the fundamentals.

That understanding of where to stand and when to move to the net makes a huge difference in padel, and picking up it through coaching is a far shorter route to actually getting the most from your games.

For players who’ve got the basics nailed and are looking to push your game further, there are sessions centred on more technical shots.

Master the bandeja (a controlled overhead shot that keeps you at the net) and the vibora (a more aggressive version with spin), and you’ll begin to see what separates casual players from folk who really get the game. There are social sessions too, where you show up on your own and get paired with other players, no need to arrange a group.

The Court Team

It’s one of the quickest ways to get to know new faces and get regular sessions going without having to organise a group of four every time. A good number of our members from Balloch kicked off by rocking up to a social session on their own and now get on court two or three times a week with players they met on court.

Not Just Padel Courts

This is probably where The Court feels most different from other padel clubs near Balloch.

Picture the opposite of a shed with courts crammed in, and you’re on the right track. The club’s got a fully serviced restaurant and bar, so you can have a bite and a drink either side of your game without having to drive anywhere else.

Chatting During Pickleball Game

It turns an hour of padel into a full evening out, and that’s just how we intended it.

And right next door there’s the Pilates studio, also on site. Padel develops the cardio and agility side, while Pilates brings the core strength and flexibility that help you play better on court and bounce back more quickly.

Plenty of our members actually pair both in the one visit! There’s a pro shop too, so when you get hooked (and it almost always does happen) you can grab your own racket without having to buy one online and hope it turns out right!

Our staff can talk you through what matches your ability and play style.

And then there are private events, another part of what we offer here. After a team-building day, a birthday, or just a fresh idea for a night out with friends? Padel is really easy to arrange around a group because the rules are simple and the games are snappy!

With the bar and restaurant on site, you’ve got the entire evening taken care of in one spot.

Community Padel in the Heart of Glasgow’s Southside

One thing players sense from the start about The Court is it doesn’t seem like a corporate gym or a book-and-leave kind of place.

A proper padel community has developed here naturally, fed by the players who play regularly, the social sessions that bring new faces together, and the restaurant and bar that give everyone a reason to linger after the last point.

Experienced players mix with newcomers who began last month. That’s the vibe we wanted from day one.

Regular league for members who want structure and friendly competition. Tournaments throughout the year bringing players from across Glasgow and beyond.

But truthfully, it’s not purely about winning!

A few of the greatest nights at the club are the ones where nobody’s keeping score, the restaurant is packed with faces who came for a session and stayed for the meal, and padel is doing what it does best: pulling folk together.

Finding a padel club in Glasgow that seems like somewhere you really fit in isn’t always easy, but come and see what the community is like here and we reckon you’ll sense the difference.

We reckon you’ll want to join.

Padel or Other Sports in Balloch?

If you’re coming from tennis, the main adjustment is the walls.

Ball stays in play off the glass. That shifts your entire approach about shot selection.

You can’t just blast winners into the corners the way you would on a tennis court, because your opponent can still return the ball off the back wall!

Patience and placement over raw power. Tennis players find that a welcome change but unexpectedly tricky at first.

Coming from squash, the move is a touch more natural because you’re already used to walls being part of the game.

The big differences are that you hit across a net rather than into the same wall, the court is open above you as opposed to closed off on all sides, and the ball bounces differently off glass compared to a squash court wall.

Squash players adapt fast though. The volleying at the net feels familiar.

If you’ve never played any racket sport in your life, padel is without question the perfect sport to kick off with.

More forgiving than tennis. More social than squash. Less brutal than five-a-side. Still a genuine workout.

You’ll use up somewhere between 400 and 700 calories in an hour of padel depending on effort level, and it’s way softer on your knees than running on concrete.

Balloch’s Padel Community is Growing

Balloch’s padel scene has grown a remarkably long way, in a short time.

Only a few years ago, there was practically nowhere to play!

The Court is different because it’s a dedicated padel club, not a add-on to a golf range or a gym chain.

Every part about this place was designed around racket sports, from the courts to the coaching programme to the restaurant and bar!

Maybe you’ve had a go at padel somewhere else in Balloch and you’re after a club that takes the sport to heart without dropping the enjoyable and open feel. If so, we’d really love to have you.
